Environmental pollution is a major challenge and if not addressed, will cause a lot of damage. The automobile sector is realizing the potential of clean mobility solutions to reduce the rate of carbon emission from vehicles. Geliose Mobility is engaged in designing of energy efficient, passenger convenient and cost-effective electric vehicles for public transport.

In an interview with Dr. Vanita Srivastava, founder and CEO of Geliose Mobility Aditya Tiwari spells out the challenges in this sector and the way ahead.

What does your startup deal with?

At Geliose Mobility we believe that the future of the commute is shared, connected and electric. With this vision, we are working towards developing an electric vehicle ecosystem to support the public transport.
To accelerate the transition towards zero pollution commute, we are focused on developing core technologies that runs and supports the electric vehicle architecture. We are designing innovative and efficient vehicles to solve the existing problems of public transport and bolster connectivity.
Together our products and technologies will create an ecosystem that will address the problem of vehicular pollution and subsequent climate change.

How and when did you get the idea for the startup?

Almost three years ago while exploring the field we wanted to work for, we got a chance to interact with electric rickshaw drivers. They managed to earn a good income but had to battle many problems. We sensed that electric rickshaws had a strong potential for growth and soon realised the huge scope of innovation to design, improve and develop light electric vehicles for shared commutes.
Our startup is based on three fundamental pillars: firstly, we are connected to nature and want to contribute towards addressing the climate crisis, secondly we want to empower the drivers by providing affordable, sustainable and highly efficient vehicles and lastly we believe that technological innovation is the key to create an impact by solving the most crucial problems.
We have imbibed a customer centric process in the development of our vehicles. The idea of our first product Pedicab that we recently launched was sketched while understanding the needs and problems of the pedal rickshaw drivers and keeping the requirements of the passengers in mind.
Our company also transitioned into a more technology centric approach to ensure that every step we take makes us leapfrog towards a better mobility.

What were the main challenges?

In a hardware startup, prototyping is very capital intensive and when we talk about automotive sector in which we are working this problem is even more dominant. We also faced the challenge of limited resources which obviously affects the pace of technological development.
Team building is also a challenge as it becomes difficult to find relevant key members with pertinent skills related to electric vehicle technologies.
One of the major challenges we have faced after launching Pedicab was the resistance of NBFCs to finance the rickshaw drivers. We are looking for a sustainable financing partner to ease the buying process of the drivers.

What is your future roadmap?

In the past few years we have focussed on improving the Li-ion battery technology by making an efficient battery management system which is going through rugged testing and is ready to be commercialized.
We are already in the market with our first vehicle Pedicab, which is armed with advanced battery technology and fast charging. The vehicle is designed with optimal ergonomics to provide excellent comfort to the passenger, plus a smooth ride quality through suspensions systems. This vehicle reduces the manual labour of the rickshaw drivers and will be able to increase their daily income. We have started taking orders from fleet owners and individual drivers for this vehicle and after covering the Delhi-NCR market, we will move towards tier-1,2,3 cities.
We are also working on developing indigenous electric power train for light electric vehicles, which will be used in our electric three wheeler vehicle, that we plan to launch in 2020.

What kind of help did you get from IITD?

We have got help from IIT Delhi on various fronts: be it the patenting expertise from the experts of FITT, the constant advisory on the business model, technology differentiation and the compliances—all have helped us gain confidence and grow . The lab facilities that were made available helped us boost our research and development work.
